Chapter 16

The next two days on the set of The Proud and the Passionate went smoothly, even though they lasted long into the evening. Taye kept everyone on schedule, accomplished what he set out to do and felt positive about the pace of the work. The cast accepted him, the crew was cooperative and so far, he hadn’t received any negative feedback from the studio.

However, he was worried about Jewel. She had begun to play Caprice Desmond with cool familiarity instead of the brash crispness he wanted. She was prepared every day, knew her lines and executed them with precision, but she was not delivering the spark he’d seen in her earlier performances.

Taye tapped his desk with his pen, thinking—hoping he was not the cause of this clampdown of her emotions. No, she’s just overworked, he rationalized.

Daytime television moved at an incredible pace, with the actors working extremely hard, for very long hours. Jewel often memorized as many as thirty-five pages of dialogue a day and usually got one take to get it right. The network produced two-hundred fifty shows a year, and the grueling schedule could take its toll. Taye understood that Jewel was focused on her work and driven to succeed, but how long could she continue in this intensely fast-paced environment without losing some of her stamina and grit? He just hoped she wasn’t holding back because of him.

Since their encounter in her dressing room, Taye had kept his promise to treat her with professional respect. He didn’t visit her dressing room, didn’t offer her rides home and even though tempted to, didn’t call her at home in the evening. He was determined not to upset her or infer that he expected anything from her except her best work.

At the studio, he was the competent, all-about-work director she expected him to be. However, if Jewel could see what was going on inside his head, he was sure she’d find a tangled mess of unfulfilled longing and fantasy dreams about a love affair with her.

Now, Taye swiveled to his computer, clicked on the browser at the top of his screen and surfed over to Jewel’s Web site, which he’d begun to visit quite often. He loved the photo that dominated her home page. Her sexy red dress accentuated her curves. Her alluring smile zapped him with a jolt of desire. Her hair, tumbling in loose curls around her face, created a seductive, taunting vision and her luminous brown eyes cut straight into his heart.

Oh, what I’d love to do to this woman! Taye thought, swiveling back and forth in nervous longing as he clicked on the tab for Jewel’s Favorite Things. He had almost memorized the daytime diva’s favorite foods, wines, vacation spots, movies, books and restaurants. He was pleased to see that Tansu House on Rodeo Drive was one of her favorite restaurants. He’d visited the posh eatery a few times after his split from Rona, when he’d felt like blowing a bundle of cash on a fancy date, which hadn’t happened very often.
